Create a Christmas Door Decoration

For a Festive Front Porch Display

Celebrate the holiday with a Christmas door decoration. Decorating your front porch with a beautiful door display or just hanging a well designed Christmas wreath will help spread holiday cheer.

With the help of several blogs, we've captured some fun, unique, and most "holiday-ish" Christmas door displays to share with you.

We know you will not only be delighted with their decorations but also find many ideas for your own front porch.

Candy Cane Poles at Yellow Dog Design

Christine of Yellow Dog Design created an eye-catching and most fun front porch and Christmas door decoration display. Mary and I love Christine's candy poles.

To make the candy poles (in the photo above), Christine used six-inch PVC pipe which you can purchase at local home supply stores.

She spray painted them white to cover the writing and graphics that are stamped on the PVC. Then she used hot glue to fasten the ribbon onto the PVC. To finish the candy poles, she glued large colorful ball-shaped ornaments onto the tops.

Christmas Decorating Tip

PVC is relatively inexpensive and comes in various diameters. You can cut it to length easily with a hack saw and paint it any color. You can also purchase PVC joints like elbows to turn it into a candy cane shape.

You can drill holes into the PVC, paint the PVC colors of your choosing, insert a light string, and create a fun lighted decoration. Connect lengths to create a frame with l-joints and frame your front door. Fun!

To stabilize the poles, Christine placed the PVC poles in urns and used stones for weight to keep the PVC in place. If you don't have urns, another option is to use buckets or large pots (which you could decorate) partially filled with sand, rocks, or stones.

The remaining display consists of lighted garland complete with candy canes and ornaments along with a complementary front door wreath delightfully decorated with snowflakes and a blue bow.

Notice how the blue in the bow coordinates with the color of the ribbon on the pole - nice touch.

Shiny Little Boxes - Words On Wheels

Debbie of Words On Wheels shared this truly fun Christmas door decoration idea that kids will surely love!

What you don't know is this is the work of Debbie's mom Dee, a young lady in her seventies affectionately known as "the Duchess".

She gathered materials for her display months in advance, saving little boxes and wrapping them over time.

Talk about front porch and Christmas door decoration displays - she cuts these from plywood and decorates them herself.

Debbie takes a slightly, more subtle approach for her front porch. She uses a theme upon which to decorate her front door and porch. Cardinals dominate and can be seen in the front door wreath and pillow covers on her porch furniture.

Christmas poinsettias on table Themes can make porch decorating a bit easier and can be used as the basis of decorating year round.

Choose a central subject like Debbie did or even a color. You can then incorporate it into wreaths, outdoor cushions, outdoor wall art, and other decorative items.

Add Fresh Greenery to a Faux Wreath

Make a purchased wreath more fresh and special by adding a few fresh elements. Dave and I made this Christmas door decoration for our front door.

Charming Red Plaid - Cuisine Kathleen

Kathleen of Cuisine Kathleen also uses a theme on her front porch. From the red plaidribbons on the front door wreath and garland strand to outdoor cushions and throws, Kathleen dresses her porch in this colorful classic plaid color.

This decorating scheme works extremely well with her white wicker furniture. Kathleen's porch is not only festive but also has immense curb appeal. Mary and I also like the outdoor lamp which is perfect on almost any front porch.

This is a very good example of extending your Christmas door decoration across your porch for a dramatic look.

Debbie Dabble Loves Christmas!

Debbie of Debbie Dabble doesn't have a typical porch but that doesn't stop her from decorating her front door.

The lighted garland with the red bows matches the front door wreath. The wreath is arched over the house number understandably. The garland makes her front door entrance feel grand!

Debbie updated her wreath with red ornaments. Most of us reuse Christmas decorations year after year; adding a few new decorative items to them is an easy way to keep them visually fresh.

Decorating old sleds is popular and this one caught our eye.

Debbie used burlap to create a bow, added a pair of skates, some greenery, and a red bell to make a very appealing decoration beside the front door.

Even if you don't have a porch, Debbie proves you can still decorate to create a most pleasing holiday scene for all to enjoy.

A Starfish Cottage Christmas

Kristy of tarfish Cottage knows you don't have to have snow to decorate for Christmas. Creative, Kristy used palm fronds along with holly, pine cones, berries, evergreens and a starfish to make this crafty front door basket as a Christmas door decoration.

Also note the scarf-type bows on the garland and basket, a nice deviation from standard bows. We like the clean and festive look Kristy created and is a good example that you don't have to have a lot of decorations to make an impact.
